Spoil sports! An advert for sex shop chain Ann Summers has been banned after complaints it was degrading to women. The billboard advert, displayed in the North West, prompted 22 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). It carried the words, "Lancashire hotbot ... for fashion and passion whip along to your local store". It showed a photograph of a woman's back. She was wearing a bra and a thong and her hands were handcuffed behind her back. Surrey-based Ann Summers claimed its adverts "intended to give women sexual confidence and always showed women in control of their sexuality".
the lastest advert outside promise on the huge bill board shows about 20 women, standing with their backs to you, in nothing but G strings. the advert, for underwear company sloggi carries the slogan "it's string time"
Stupidity... In a population of almost 60.2 million, it is absurd that as little as 22 complaints can have an advert withdrawn. We live in an age where minority opinion can affect the majority. How often do you see adverts which you find irritating? I suggest an experiment: we select an advert that is not offensive in any way, we decide upon a ridiculous reason as to why it offends, and then we complain, one after the other, by email and telephone, and demand it is with withdrawn. I think it would be fun to do this every month. With over 1000 Board Members, I am sure 50 - 150 of us could just about shut down the advertising campaigns of major companies. This might sound crazy, but I assure you the Pot Noodle advert with 'strobe effects' was withdrawn from 20 complaints, and the 'dog breath' advert was cancelled from 112 complaints. Imagine; 'I find the attitude of the woman in the Andrex advert offensive to my sensibilities' multiplied by 150 to the relevant watchdog authority. Andrex is contacted and the ad is withdrawn. Simple! Sounds fun doesn’t it? Lee
at the end of the day those who complain have nothing better to do than wrtie letters of make fone calls to twist bout sumthing!!
