if u called a pakistani a paki he'd take offence, a sikh a rag head he'd take offence, a black man a wog he'd take offence, an arab a sand monkey he'd take offence... but because I'm jewish I should just take it as a joke and stop being touchy?!?!?!? Loosy I've been subject to anti-semitism all my life, my family have been targeted by the bnp... yeah us jews are never subject to racism these days
well seein as though this thread was called AMSTERDAM im just gonna say im going in EASTER!! woohoo!! shiva here i come :chill: :chill: ive missed the old girl and im sure shes missed me too
Yes all those examples would be offensive. But look at what i said, in context. You said you'd be offended if someone made a jewish remark cos you're overly pc, directly after that i made a jewish remark, having never done so before. Does that not suggest it was just a joke to wind you up? That's why i said you were being touchy.
I know exactly what you were doing and ti still offends me... everytime I buy a round I get "wow and ur jewish"... its all just in jest... but still racist and still offensive.
There's a lot of hypocrites on here ... your haggis tossing jibes could be deemed offensive and racist
There are a very few things that still can't be joked about IMHO, but the holocaust is definitely one of them
thats why ya touchy joe. i had a feelin u musta had some sort of persecution bout ya race for u to be this way. u'll find that people who haven't suffered that type of thing don't usually take as much offence when its said in a jokin way. i've got friends from uni, blacka nd white, who call each other what would be called seriously harsh racist names but know its in jest and is more of a lads pet name if anything. its like the term "nigga". if wantin to cause offence then this is the boy to do it however black people call each other it all the time, as a sign of fondness and friendship. i can understand ur views and reasons why u get so stressed when it comes to this joe, and respect them coz u have been persecuted, but not everyone that laughs at racial jokes is racist, and its not always said in order to cause offence.
But its the joking I take serious offence too, one of my favourite bernard manning joes is: Now in order to find this joke funny, one must think to some extent that "they" aren't british - otherwise it just isn't funny... Or in the wise old words of Homer Simpson "Its funny because its true"... Racist jokes encourage segregation even ona tiny level like my mates going "haha thats not very jewish - u buying the drinks and everything"... It may be harmless fun for you - but it isn't u that has to live with the stereotype.
that benard manning joke could be directed towards any natinality not just race. my mate stew comes from german descent but he's english. if ya born here ur english, simple as. sum1 might live in newcastle but if they were born in london they're a cockney. if they have kids up here, the kids would be geordies, kinda simple if u ask me. personally i'm surprised that u get upset by the slightest of jokes such as the one above, especially if its said by ur mates. its like when i was a kid and me mates called me a fat bastard (which i was), i didn't take it to heart coz i knew they didn't have any malicious intent. however if sum1 i didn't know said it in a derogatory way i'd end up up quite upset. everyone is entitled to take things in their own way i suppose, but i now know not to crack any "harmless" jokes to u mate
this argument can also be applied to fat people, bald people, people with glasses, etc - it's all 'name calling' and stereotyping. i get, and always have done, the fat jokes thrown my way because i'm a big lad.
no, you're wrong. They're personal insults not racial stereotypes. If you'd brought up blondes being thick or essex lasses being slappers I would have agreed with you, but calling someone a lard arse is not the same as kike/wog/paki jokes. fact: racial sterotyping, even "harmless" jokes, promotes racist attitudes
But fat people weren't killed in there millions because of the said stereotype... Without money lending stereotypes, the jews may never of went through a a holocaust... these are not harmless jokes, they encourage and have encouraged huge racial prejudice.
A lot of name calling depends on how well you know the person. You have to know them pretty well to call them anything derogatory at all, but even then you should know what their personal limits are. For example, I have a friend I can get away with calling queen, poof, arse-bandit etc, but would never, ever call him faggot as I know he hates it. However, if someone he didn't know called him queen etc, it would usually be deemed to be offensive. The difference is knowing the intention behind what is said. Put simply, if you don't know someone pretty well, it is best to avoid calling them anything that could be seen as derogatory.
Totally agree with that, I always pull people up for saying stuff that could be viewed as racist. I feel that if I do not I'm adding to the problem and making it more acceptable.
