    Computer Illeteracy

How can people be so shit with computers?

It astounds me that people have used computers for years, but ask them to "go on to the desktop" and they look utterly lost. Apparently, copying from one spreadsheet to another is "whizz kid stuff"

    I mean :wtf:

    Opinions?

I think its just sheer fear of technology, the resistance of change and progession.

I think people shoulkd have to take mandatory skills tests for computers.

Obviously not the same, but you cant drive without a licence....and a wreckless computer newbie could cause all kinds of havoc!

Also, about knowing it, this is true

But when you have showed somebody 10 times how to log in, you would not expect them to keep asking every day, only to be shown the same thing.

    Tell me about it!

I do manage to keep my cool though. some people do have the odd dig with such outbusts as "you just expect me to know what a folder is" and "you're the whizz, not me"

    Sadly, some deserve no sympathy.

The best I have heard is "my pc is broken" only to find out that the monitor is turned off, and, quite astonshingly...

the monitors have rotary volume controls on the base, yesterday i was installing some dictation software, so i turned it up to test it....."eee, i thought that was volume, i didnt realise it made my pc go faster, no wonder my computer is so slow"

Everyday I have to deal with people who struggle with:
    "Can you click start please"
    I often get a response:
    "wheres that, its not there"

the best one has to be when you're required to press any key, and some dumb people ask where this 'any' key is :monkey:

I have trained quite a few people at work (DSS) on PC's n that, we used to have an old internal system with no mouse and people used to always be baffled with that and complain :

"Here man where's me mouse" as there looking behind the computer/under the desk n all sorts.

I have had people picking the mouse up - pointing it at the PC and waiting for summit to happen whilst they press the buttons.

People have also sat down n looked as if they have had a clue then started pressing the screen.

Sorta sums up the DSS really...

my old lecturer told me about one yank fella who phoned up the expensive 24 hours helpdesk because his mouse was at the edge of the mouse mat but the cursor was still in the middle of the screen. he was totally baffled and never thought to lift it up and move it back over.

i have noticed that most people who are completely hopless with computers are normally very intelligent people who have a massive knowledge in a particular subject tho.

Argh. Whoever mentioned the double clicking thing. What the hell will it take to get people to realise the term 'double-click' isn't the norm when using a computer. My auntie used to do it for years and my dad is the same. "click that" so he double clicks. Stuff starts popping up then my mam who's watching starts to moan about how the internet should be fast now that we have 2mb and why does it try to load so many things and take so much time to open.

    Sigh.
