    Evolution of DJ'ing

Saw this on Matt's board - and although shamelessly stolen... its a good topic to get a few opinions on:

So.... what direction do you think Djing is going? What do you think the industry will be like in another 5 years?

I don't think it is anything special, I never have done however I still love hearing good quality DJ's, having big nights out with my mates and I do admire and respect some of the top jocks.

I think there's too many people on the dance floors these days that think they can do better than the guys behind the decks just because they have a set of technics, a pioneer mixer, a CDJ thingymajig and a mixed cd that joe bloggs said was "lush".

    Most of them can't.

Its a shame that although the accessibility of dj'ing increases.... that people are still stuck in the superstar DJ mentality.

Whats wrong with it being a monday nass? - bright, early and ready to go :) wheee!

I think people have become fed up and disgruntled with the way the scene has piegon holed itself and djs becoming fed up with the scene for piegon holing them.

Today, you can get a dj playing in 1 room of a club, then later on in the other room. GRH, Shan, Rob Tissera, Jules, even Glazby doing quality house sets.

I wouldn't say this is a bad thing. People shouldn't automatically assume just because they are great at 1, they can't be as equally as great at another. I think this is pushing djs to add new styles under their belt and prove people wrong and show they are good for more than 1 thing.

Hard dance has opened itself up with influences coming from it in all directions, techno. trance, nrg. It's given Djs the chance to find their own style, a style that sigifies them. It means Djs arent afraid to try out new sounds which is all good.

I've been in many a back room and I've heard such an array of sounds it was wicked and has really surprised me how much I enjoy it, especially live percussion, something say 3 years ago I probably would have turned my nose right up at. Clubs are opening themselves up to this kind of thing. Godskitchen are onto a right winner, their setup has something for everyone and think thats how its going to go for alot of clubs or at least it should.

Ive still got my sleepy head on, I may come back to this if it doesnt make any sense

    Re: Evolution of DJ'ing

A)I dont care what formatt the tune is on as long as the tune comes out decent. But I think we have seen the end of fat DJs & DJs who buy there clothes from shops in the High St, going to the top. Slim OR a muscle bulid & style is needed nowadays & the DJ is going to have to become more of a showman.

B)I am customer so I am not worried about what direction 'THE INDUSTRY' goes because if I dont like it I will find another part of 'THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY' to spend my disposable part of my income on

As for DJing being nothing special cos everyone can do it, most people can run but loads of people still think the likes of Paula Radcliffe are special/inspiring

Refer to the [/b] - that's exactly my point.

I'll say again - "I think there's too many people on the dance floors these days that think they can do better than the guys behind the decks just because they have a set of technics, a pioneer mixer, a CDJ thingymajig and a mixed cd that joe bloggs said was "lush"."

Re: Re: Re: Evolution of DJ'ing

WE ARE ALREADY SEEING AN UPSURGE IN PRETTY DJs!!!!!! Foy,Halliwell,Fanciulli etc even x-Tesco worker O'Bir has had a makeover.

Also just because they wear good clothes & have decent haircuts doesn't mean the play bad tunes!!!

on the evolution of djing the only thing i dont get is why they use cd players when i thought djing was all about having a set RECORD decks i just dont get the fasination of cd players surely it cant be the same as decks and tunes are to easy to get you could download a SONG and take away the fun of trying to find a record.

Producers turned DJ's are a step in the right direction - Lets people earn their stripes and get their foot on the ladder (Scot Project, Timo, Armin, PVD).

If you arent a producer, you need to be able to bring something pretty special to the mix if your gonna cut it .... Eddie and his scratching turned him from zero to hero in a very short time.

The days of the 2 decks and a bag of vinyl for newbies on the scene doesnt seem like it cuts the mustard these days.

CDs are much more versatile for cueing and looping and now can do almost anything that vinyl can. Plus CDs are easier to travel with than heavier records. You'll be surprised how many of the top DJs play nearly there whole set off CDs

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. In Ibiza never saw Deep Dish with a record, Laurent Garnier with a Kaos pad and Ritchie Hawtin at Cocoon did have a couple of laptops and was using a lot of FX. As for Morillo I don't know what his DJ sets contained b4 the CD loops came along

    Obviously.

But DJing is a bit more than 1-2hrs in club nowadays for the superstar DJs.

Your name should be Jusk90 as you seem to be stuck in the 90s.

    MOVE ON!
